1) Mahatma Gandhi in South Africa, Part – 1

  • Before leading the Indian freedom movement, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi used to live in South Africa to fight against injustice & class division.
  • Gandhiji arrived in South Africa on 24 May 1893 to attend to a legal matter of Dada Abdullah Jhaveri.
  • In no time, Gandhiji became the leader of the South African Indian community.
  • From 1893 to 1914, Gandhiji worked as an attorney & a public worker.

 

2) Mahatma Gandhi in South Africa, Part – 2

  • Gandhiji formed the Natal Indian Congress in 1894 in South Africa.
  • Inspired by English author John Ruskin’s book ‘Unto This Last’, Gandhiji set up Phoenix Farm near Durban.
  • Here, he trained his cadres on non-violent Satyagraha.
  • In Sept 1906, he organised the first Satyagraha campaign to protest against the Transvaal Asiatic ordinance that was constituted against the local Indians.

 

3) Swachh Survekshan 2022: Indore adjudged the cleanest city of India

  • President Droupadi Murmu on 1st Oct 2022 presented the Swachh Survekshan Awards 2022 in New Delhi.
  • Indore has been adjudged the cleanest city of India for the 6th year in a row, while Madhya Pradesh is the cleanest state in the country.
  • Surat is the second cleanest city in the category of cities with a population more than a lakh.
  • Shivamogga in Karnataka received the fast mover city award.

 

4) Arunachal Governor given additional charge of Meghalaya

  • Arunachal Pradesh Governor B D Mishra has been given additional charge of Meghalaya as incumbent Satya Pal Malik completes his term on 4th Oct 2022.
  • Mr Malik was first appointed as the Governor of Bihar in 2017.
  • He was appointed as the Governor of J&K when the Centre revoked the special status to J&K under Article 370 on August 5, 2019.
  • He was appointed as the Governor of Meghalaya in 2020.

 

5) Bihar Agriculture Minister Sudhakar Singh resigns

  • Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has accepted the resignation of Agriculture Minister Sudhakar Singh.
  • Tourism Minister Kumar Sarvajit has been made the new Agriculture Minister.
  • He is the second Minister after Law Minister Kartikeya Singh to resign from the Nitish Kumar cabinet.

 

6) Champaran Satyagraha of 1917, Part -1

  • The Champaran Satyagraha of 1917 was the first satyagraha movement led by Mahatma Gandhi in British India.
  • It is considered a historically important rebellion in the Indian independence movement.
  • It was a farmer’s uprising that took place in Champaran district of Bihar during the British rule.
  • The farmers were protesting against having to grow indigo with barely any payment for it.

 

7) Champaran Satyagraha of 1917, Part -2

  • Gandhi led organised protests and strike against the landlords, who with the guidance of the British government, signed an agreement granting more compensation and control over farming for the poor farmers of the region.
  • Champaran movement concluded with the introduction of ‘Champaran Agrarian Bill’ by W. Maude, Member of Executive Council, Government of Bihar and Orissa.

 

8) Know About: Armenia

9) International Day of Non-Violence: 2nd October

  • International Day of Non-Violence is observed every year on 2nd October, the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi.
  • Mahatma Gandhi, one of the tallest leaders of Indian independence movement, was the pioneer of the philosophy of non-violence.
  • This day was established on 15 June 2007 by the United Nations.
  • Its date corresponds with those of the Indian national public holiday of Gandhi Jayanti.

 

10) Indian javelin thrower Shivpal Singh suspended for doping

 

  • Indian javelin thrower Shivpal Singh has been suspended from competing till October 2025 due to a doping violation.
  • He tested positive for the banned substance methandienone, a performance-enhancing steroid.
  • Uttar Pradesh-based, Shivpal was a silver-medallist at the 2019 Asian Championships.
  • Earlier, Discus thrower Navjeet Kaur Dhillon was also banned due to doping violations.

 

11) Ajay Bhadoo appointed as Deputy Election Commissioner

  • Senior bureaucrat Ajay Bhadoo has been appointed as the Deputy Election Commissioner of the Election Commission of India.
  • Bhadoo, an IAS officer of Gujarat cadre, has been appointed to the post up to July 24, 2024.
  • Also, Akash Tripathi, IAS officer of Madhya Pradesh cadre, has been appointed as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), MyGov, Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology.

 

12) World Habitat Day: 3 October

  • World Habitat Day is a UN initiative that is observed on the first Monday of every October, annually.
  • In 2022, it is being observed on the 3rd of October.
  • The day is observed to acknowledge the state of our towns and cities, and the basic right of all to adequate shelter.
  • It was first celebrated in 1986 in Nairobi, Kenya.
  • 2022 Theme: “Mind the Gap. Leave No One and Place Behind”.
