1) International Day for Biological Diversity: 22 May

  • The International Day for Biological Diversity is a United Nations-sanctioned international day for the promotion of biodiversity issues. It is currently held on May 22.
  • The theme for 2022 is “Building a Shared Future For All Life.”
  • The United Nations General Assembly adopted May 22 as International Day for Biological Diversity in December 2000.

 

2) Infosys reappoints Salil Parekh as CEO and MD

  • IT major Infosys on 22nd May reappointed Salil S. Parekh as Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director (CEO & MD) of the company.
  • Salil Parekh has been the CEO and MD of Infosys since January 2018.
  • Infosys is the second-largest Indian IT company after Tata Consultancy Services.
  • The company was founded in Pune and is headquartered in Bangalore.

3) World’s highest weather station installed on Mt. Everest

  • A team of experts from the National Geographic Society has installed the “world’s highest weather station” on Mt. Everest at an altitude of 8,830 metres to automatically measure various meteorological phenomena.
  • Nepal’s Department of Hydrology and Meteorology said the automatic weather station. was installed a few metres below summit point.
  • The team is led by climate scientist Baker Perry.

 

4) IDBI Bank to exit insurance joint venture

  • IDBI Bank is divesting its entire stake in Ageas Federal Life Insurance Company Ltd (AFLI) to Ageas Insurance International NV (Ageas) for Rs 580.20 crore.
  • AFLI, is a joint venture among IDBI Bank, Federal Bank and Ageas, which is one of Europe’s largest insurance firms.
  • IDBI Bank is an Indian private sector bank and a subsidiary of Life Insurance Corporation Rakesh Sharma is the CEO & MD.

 

5) 4th edition of India-Bangladesh Navy Bilateral exercise

  • The fourth edition of the Indian Navy-Bangladesh Navy Coordinated Patrol (CORPAT) commenced on 22nd May.
  • The patrolling drill commenced in the northern Bay of Bengal and would continue between May 22 and 23.
  • Two of the Indian Navy’s indigenous warships – INS Kora and INS Sumedha – are participating in this exercise.
  • The last time CORPAT was conducted in October 2020.

 

6) Anthony Albanese is Australia’s next Prime Minister

  • Australia’s Labor party leader, Anthony Albanese has claimed victory in the national election after Prime Minister Scott Morrison conceded defeat, ending nearly a decade of conservative government.
  • Anthony Albanese would be sworn in as the 31st Prime Minister of Australia on May 23.
  • Australia is the world’s sixth-largest country by area.

7) SC orders constitution of 25 special courts for cheque bounce cases

  • The Supreme Court on May 19, directed the constitution of 25 special courts with a retired judge in five states for expeditious disposal of cheque bounce cases.
  • The special courts under the Negotiable Instruments Act will be set up in Maharashtra, Delhi, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan in view of a large number of pending cases.

8) Swimmer Ariarne Titmus sets 400-meter freestyle world record

  • Olympic gold medalist Ariarne Titmus hast broken the women’s 400-meter freestyle world record at the Australian swimming championships.
  • Titmus’s time of 3 minutes 56.4 seconds broke the previous record set by American rival Katie Ledecky at the 2016 Olympics.
  • Titmus also won gold in the 200-meter freestyle at the Tokyo Games last year.

 

9) Piyush Goyal leads Indian delegation at World Economic Forum 2022

  • Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal is leading the Indian delegation this year at the annual Meeting of World Economic Forum at Davos in Switzerland.
  • The delegation includes 2 Union Ministers, Chief Ministers and Senior Ministers of 6 states and several industry leaders.
  • The World Economic Forum was founded on 24 January 1971 by German engineer and economist Klaus Schwab.

 

10) Telecom Regulatory Authority of India completes 25 years

  • The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India was established through the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India Act, 1997.
  • It completed 25 years in 2022.
  • PM Modi released a postal stamp to commemorate the event.
  • During the event, Prime Minister also launched a 5G Test Bed, a multi-institute collaborative project by a total of eight institutes led by IIT Madras.

11) World’s Longest Suspension Bridge opens in Czech Republic

  • The world’s longest suspension bridge named “Sky Bridge 721” has been opened for tourists in the Czech Republic.
  • The bridge connects two mountain ridges and hangs 95 metres (312 feet) above a valley and can be accessed by cable car. It is 721 metres long.
  • The Czech Republic is a landlocked country in Central Europe.

12) Karnataka reserves 33% posts for women in outsourced govt jobs

  • The Karnataka government has ordered 33 per cent reservation for women among the outsourced employees in all its departments.
  • Through outsourcing, the state government recruits data entry operators, housekeeping staff and other group D employees, and drivers.
  • Karnataka was formed on 1 November 1956.

13) World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development: 21 May

  • The World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development is a United Nations-sanctioned international holiday for the promotion of diversity and dialogue issues. It is currently celebrated on May 21.
  • It is also known as Diversity Day.
  • This day was created as a result of the destruction of the Buddha statues of Bamiyan in Afghanistan in 2001.

 

14) 144th birth anniversary of “The Great Gama”: May 22

  • Today marks the 144th birth anniversary of the Amritsar-born wrestler Ghulam Mohammad Baksh Butt, popularly known as RustameHind and by his ring name “The Great Gama”
  • Undefeated in a career spanning more than 52 years, he is considered one of the greatest wrestlers of all time.
  • He was born on May 22nd, 1878 in Jabbowal Village, Amritsar district, Punjab Province, British India.

 

15) 10-year-old skater girl from Mumbai climbs Everest base camp

  • In a rare accomplishment, 10-year-old skater Rhythm Mamania from Mumbai became one of the youngest Indian mountaineers to climb the Everest base camp.
  • The base camp is situated at 5,364 metres and it took 11 days for her to complete the expedition.
  • There are 2 base camps on Mt. Everest- South Base Camp is in Nepal at an altitude of 5,364 metres while North Base Camp is in Tibet at 5150 mt.

 

16) Eminent Sanskrit and Hindi Scholar Dr Rama Kant Shukla dies

  • An eminent Sanskrit and Hindi Scholar, Padma Shri awardee (2013) Dr Rama Kant Shukla passed away in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh on 11th May 2022.
  • He was the founder and president of Bhartiya Sanskrit Patrakar Sangh.
  • He was also awarded the Sahitya Academy Award in Sanskrit for Mama Janani in 2018.

 

17) China plans world’s first habitable planet search through telescope

  • Chinese scientists have proposed a space project to survey the sky through a space-borne telescope to hunt for habitable Earth-like planets outside the solar system.
  • The project, named Closeby Habitable Exoplanet Survey (CHES), if carried out, will be the first space mission specially designed to search for habitable terrestrial planets around nearby sun-like stars.

 

18) Maharashtra partners with WEF to fight plastic pollution

  • Maharashtra has joined hands with the World Economic Forum’s Global Plastic Action Partnership (GPAP) to advance regional efforts to fight plastic pollution.
  • The Maharashtra Govt. will work with GPAP to launch a National Plastic Action Partnership (NPAP) in Maharashtra as a platform to tackle plastic waste pollution.
  • The GPAP-Maharashtra partnership is the first in India.

 

19) 250th birth anniversary of Raja Ram Mohan Roy: 22nd May, 2022

  • Union Culture Ministry will commemorate the 250th Birth Anniversary of Raja Ram Mohan Roy from 22nd May 2022 till 22nd of May next year.
  • Union Minister for Culture G Kishan Reddy also virtually unveiled a statue of the `Father of Bengal’s Renaissance’ at Salt Lake, Kolkata.
  • Roy was an Indian reformer who was one of the founders of the Brahmo Sabha in 1828, the precursor of the Brahmo Samaj.
